Site-Specific Installation for Forever is Now 2023, Giza, Egypt
Mirror Gate is an immersive installation created specifically for Forever is Now 2023, drawing inspiration from the profound cultural legacy of ancient Egypt. The work centers around a limestone portal, crafted from the same stone as the Great Pyramids, and juxtaposed with gold and iridescent blue car-painted spheres. This fusion of ancient material and industrial finish reflects the convergence of the natural and synthetic in our post-industrial era, as well as the geological foundation of our planet.
The iridescent blue spheres evoke the sacred scarab beetle, a symbol of rebirth and regeneration, while the gold spheres reference the sun—a representation of Egypt’s spiritual and material abundance, as well as its enduring power and legacy. A pyramid form crowns the portal, establishing a direct visual connection to the monumental architecture of the Giza Plateau.
As visitors walk along the black-and-white checkerboard path, reminiscent of ancient Egyptian board games such as Senet, they encounter a mirror egg sculpture. The egg serves as a symbol of birth, growth, and creation, echoing Egyptian cosmology—particularly the myth of Thoth, the self-created deity who lays the cosmic egg containing all existence.
By reflecting the viewer and engaging with archetypal Egyptian symbols, Mirror Gate becomes a portal for self-reflection and transformation. It invites visitors to explore the depths of the subconscious, merging personal contemplation with the timeless energies of the sacred landscape that surrounds it.
